Prior to 2021, it was only on a rare occasion that our office designated pharmacotherapeutic contact hours. Continuing education providers are not required to designate pharmacotherapeutic contact hours and most often do not. The UPMC Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences does not specifically designate pharmacotherapeutic contact hours for any Regularly Scheduled Series (i.e. grand rounds, case conferences, journal clubs) or AMA credit (i.e., CME). Beginning in 2021, activities approved for ANCC credit (i.e. CNE) and designed specifically for advanced practice nurses and include content that addresses pharmacotherapeutics may delineate pharmacotherapeutic contact hours, at the discretion of the course planning committee. In these instances, the designation including the number of hours will be included on the learner’s certificate and credit transcript.

Primary responsibility for documenting completion of the continuing education requirements rests with the CRNP. It is recommended that CRNP’s with prescriptive authority retain a copy of the activity agenda or other documentation as evidence to validate the relevant pharmacotherapeutic contact hours.
