SUD Series Session 1: Current Issues in Substance Use Disorder (SUD)- Enduring

This is the first session in a five-part SUD series.
 
The purpose of this educational activity is to inform the clinical staff of present trends related to substance use disorders (SUD), identified barriers to care experienced by individuals with SUD, and an overview of current evidence-based SUD treatment and harm reduction in healthcare today.
 
SPECIAL NOTE:
There is no educational content to this course. This course is designed to supplement training that has already occurred. This course is designed to only administer the post-test and collect CME evaluations.

Target Audience

Nurses, Social Workers, Health Coaches, Registered Dieticians, and Paramedics / EMTs

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
 
  • Summarize trends in substance use and overdose deaths
  • Discuss barriers to care, particularly stigma
  • Define Harm Reduction and discuss its application in a healthcare environment
  • Summarize an overview of evidence-based substance use disorder treatment

Dr. Michael Lynch is Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Medical Toxicology, and Addiction Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, and is board certified in each of these specialties.  He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine before completing his residency in Emergency Medicine and fellowship in Medical Toxicology at the University of Pittsburgh.  Dr. Lynch works in the Emergency Departments at UPMC Presbyterian and Mercy Hospitals.  The Toxicology service at UPMC is one of the busiest in the country, seeing patients at five Pittsburgh hospitals as well as providing inpatient addiction and telemedicine treatment.  Dr. Lynch also serves as the Medical Director for the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs and Medical Director of Substance Use Disorder Services, UPMC Health Plan.
