Meeting the Needs of Patients with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities_Online

Through this offering we have created a best practice that will inform providers of concepts and terminology related to intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), health disparities and how to apply best practices for non-clinical care of patients with IDD.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other health care professionals who seek improved quality of care for the patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define key terms and concepts related to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
  • Recognize that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) represent a significant portion of the population and may be encountered as patients, customers, health plan members, residents, co-workers, family members, and friends.
  • Explore the challenges IDD individuals face when seeking health care.
  • Examine health issues that IDD patients may experience more often than other patient populations
  • Apply effective communication and interaction strategies when working with patients, customers, members, residents, and co-workers with IDD to support a positive health care experience.
