Learning Objectives

 

  1. Understand and perform standard infection prevention (Wound Care/Prep)
  2. Identify appropriate instruments used to suture and know how to handle them properly:
    1. Needle driver
    2. Forceps
    3. Scissors
  3. Know the difference between types of suture and how that suture is utilized
    1. Needle size/type and suture size/type
    2. Absorbable and non-absorbable
    3. Prolene, Vicryl, Silk
  4. Be able to perform the following procedures:
    1. Knot tying (including one-handed tie)
    2. Simple interrupted
    3. Securing chest tubes, pigtails and JP drains
    4. Running subcuticular suturing for Port closure, access incisions, and thoracotomies
    5. Proper site dressing if one is needed

         5. Discuss the basic expectations of thoracic surgery (attending preferences)
