The Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences (CCEHS) is accredited by the Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Education.
What is Joint Accreditation?
In 2010, three of the national accreditors in medicine, nursing, and pharmacy CE collaborated to create Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education™ (Joint Accreditation) allowing Joint Providers (i.e., CCEHS) the opportunity to be simultaneously accredited to award CE credits for multiple professions through a single set of accreditation standards specifically designed for interprofessional education. To maintain Joint Accreditation, the CCEHS must designate at least 25% of the of the organization’s CE activities as “interprofessional continuing education (IPCE)”.
IPCE means that the activity is awarding multiple types of credit (e.g., AMA, ANCC) for an activity that is designed by multiple professions for an interprofessional audience and addresses the professional practice gaps of the health care team.
What types of credit does the CCEHS offer under Joint Accreditation?
- AAPA (Physician Assistant)
- ACPE (Pharmacy)(not awarded for a Regularly Scheduled Series activity type)
- AMA PRA CATEGORY 1 CREDIT™ (Physician)
- ANCC (Nursing)
- APA (Psychologists)(not awarded for a Regularly Scheduled Series and Enduring Material activity types)
- ASWB (Social Work)()
- COPE
Does the process for awarding credit vary for the different types of credit?
Although there is a unified application process, there are specific requirements for the different types of credit. For example, there may be varying timelines, acceptable content and credit calculation. These nuances are challenging for the CCEHS to mange while maintaining standard processes. For this reason, you may be asked to submit supplemental documentation. And there are times when the CCEHS will not be able to award all of the credit types requested.
Is there anything I need to know before I start the application for multiple types of credit?
If you are choosing multiple types of credit, the activity is considered "interprofessional" and must be designed by and for the healthcare team. Please consider the following provisions:
- The credit type requested must be reflective of the primary target audience the activity is designed to address.
- The credit type requested must include a planning committee member representing the discipline (e.g., ANCC requires a nurse on the planning committee).
- The activity must be planned to achieve outcome(s) that reflect the health care team.
Can I request credit for a single-profession audience (e.g., a course for nurses only)?
Yes. If the activity is planned for a single profession, only select the type of credit applicable to the single profession on the new course application.
