Clinical Connections: Street Medicine

People experiencing homelessness have physical and mental disabilities at much higher rates than  the general population, yet access care less due to barriers. This presentation will provide a  background on disability and homelessness, and care models to address barriers. Topics covered will  include: need to know strategies to discuss difficult topics with family members; necessary communication skills to communicate with both patients and caregivers about the importance of diagnosis and treatment; and, referral to appropriate community resources.

Target Audience

Nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, case managers, social workers, physiatrists/physicians, psychologists, fellows, and residents involved with rehabilitation are encouraged to attend.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the presentation, participants will:
1. have a better understanding of the prevalence of disability in people experiencing  homelessness.
2. be able to describe the unique barriers to care due that occur to the intersection of disability  and homelessness.
3. understand the role of street medicine in the care for people experiencing homelessness and  be able to refer to local organizations for care.
