Multi-disciplinary conference which will provide the nurse learners updates on patient care with respect to pediatric trauma, respiratory, and infant mechanical ventilation.  The learners will also participate in practice updates regarding aviation operations and the safety of the multi-disciplinary medical team.  The learners will participate in multi-disciplinary activities to review the lessons learned from the aviation safety stand-down.  The learners will participate in activities which will enhance the ability to communicate within the multi-disciplinary care team, specifically to enhance medical consultation skills.  The learners will participate in activities which will introduce them to the Aerogen device to be deployed throughout the program to be used in the coming year.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the learner will:

  1. Differentiate the signs and symptoms of RSV, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia.
  2. Recognize shock and respiratory failure in a pediatric patient through practical assessment.
  3. Manage the treatment of shock and respiratory comprise/failure in the pediatric patient.
  4. Manage interventions to ensure adequate ventilation in an infant.
  5. Interpret ventilator alarms and waveforms while ventilating an infant.
  6. Demonstrate connecting neonatal ventilator tubing and pre-checks.
  7. Understand how ABGs affect ventilator titrations.
  8. Demonstrate a pediatric RSI utilizing the airway checklist with appropriate pre-oxygenation, apneic oxygenation, and RSI medication.
  9. Demonstrate the appropriate sizing, placement, and securing of an i-Gel in the pediatric patient.
  10. Understand the common mechanisms of injuries and the predictable injuries for the pediatric population.
  11. Demonstrate an effective Primary and Secondary assessment in the pediatric population.
  12. Differentiate the equipment needs of pediatric patients from those of adults.
  13. Describe the various ways to perform spinal motion restriction on a child and how this differs for an adult.
  14. Identify the appropriate trauma center for a pediatric patient.
  15. Explain how bolus fluids and blood should be administered to a pediatric patient with shock.
  16. Identify key safety principles surrounding stretcher operations.
  17. Describe procedures for stretcher storage, maintenance, and logistics.
  18. Demonstrate proper stretcher use.
  19. Explain how to navigate special situations involving stretcher use (helipad operations, “jumping the pin,” mix-matching stretcher styles).
  20. Define the pathophysiology of inhaled vasodilators and clinical indications.
  21. Discuss the Aerogen system setup and Medfusion 3500 syringe pump use.
  22. Practice the setup incorporating the Hamilton T-1, Medfusion syringe pump, and the Aerogen system.
  23. Define the system-wide use and dispatching procedures.
  24. Discuss and summarize the leadership outcomes of the safety stand down and premortem exercise.
