ForwardCare of the Inpatient with Opioid Use Disorder
Literature suggests caring for patients with OUD requires additional knowledge and support. The lack of these attributes has led to staff dissatisfaction and decreased quality of care for patients with OUD. In addition, the staff has expressed a desire for education related to medicated assisted therapy and managing the complex needs of a patient with OUD. A preliminary education provided to UPMC nursing system leadership in May of 2023 was recognized as a learning opportunity for nurses within the system.
The purpose of this activity is to facilitate an understanding of how to address the needs the acute care inpatient with opioid use disorder (OUD) including medication assisted therapies and nursing considerations when planning care with interdisciplinary teams.

Learning Objectives
Learners will identify two medicated assisted therapies and nursing considerations for each medication.
