CARE: Centering gender Affirming Resources through Education - Module 3

CARE aims to increase the accessibility and supportiveness of CHCs for trans and gender diverse (TGD) college students, a community that is particularly vulnerable to hazardous drinking and sexual violence.

TGD students face a myriad of health inequalities compared to their cisgender peers. On college campuses, we see that TGD students have higher rates of hazardous drinking (i.e., heavy episodic drinking and excessive alcohol use) and sexual and intimate partner violence than their cisgender peers. These students often face discrimination and violence due to their gender identity across contexts, including within university services meant to help students and support their health. If a trans student reaches out to university support services, such as their CHC, and is discriminated against or assigned to a provider who does not understand their gender identity, they are likely to avoid care. This means that gender diverse students are missing out on critical opportunities to get the support they need in the aftermath of trauma.

Living in gender affirming environments and having access to healthcare, supportive services, and other resources can buffer the negative effects of stress, discrimination, and violence. CARE aims to offer tools and build skills that enable providers to support TGD students more effectively.

This training is developed to improve knowledge and attitudes about TGD individuals, increase self-efficacy and use of TGD-inclusive practices, and enhance knowledge and understanding of sexual violence and alcohol use in TGD communities.
