Pathways Training Program: Session 1: An Ounce of Prevention: Quality Enhancement Through Excellent Credentialing and Privileging_Enduring

Credentialing has changed a lot over the years.  What started as a mere assessment of the most basic qualifications (e.g., “licensure, clinical competence, excellent reputation and the personal recommendation of an existing member of the active medical staff”) has morphed into an extensive process that shepherds candidates through several layers of review where they are measured by colleagues against a multitude of factors.

Training Highlights:

Participants will gain a thorough understanding of credentialing fundamentals, starting from the initial contact with potential new medical staff members or recruits, through to final hiring decisions or actions on appointments and privileges. The training will also cover the process of getting new staff credentialed by payors, if applicable.

Key Topics Include:

  • Credentialing Continuum: From first contact to final hiring and credentialing by payors.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Detailed exploration of eligibility requirements and administrative determinations.
  • Waivers and Exceptions: Understanding when and how to apply waivers and exceptions to eligibility criteria.
  • Handling Misrepresentations: Strategies for addressing misrepresentations in applications.
  • Substantive Review: In-depth review of additional qualifications and special considerations during reappointment.

By the end of the Pathways Training Program, participants will be well-prepared to navigate the complexities of credentialing, ensuring both patient safety and practitioner support.

Target Audience

This CME activity is designed for nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physicians, physician assistants, and psychologists to enhance their understanding of credentialing practices and health status evaluations, ensuring both patient safety and practitioner support.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this audio conference, participants will be able to:

  • Develop threshold criteria that establish the minimum standard for the organization and eliminate consideration of clearly unqualified candidates; and/or employment, and implement processes to coordinate an efficient and appropriate response that avoids recruitment and employment of unqualified candidates and “denials” of appointment or privileges.
  • Describe the credentialing continuum and clearly delineate different phases of the continuum, including information gathering, administrative review and administrative determinations, and substantive evaluation of qualifications.
  • Identify medical staff applicants’ and members’ responsibility to participate cooperatively in the credentialing process and to resolve any concerns that are raised during that process.
  • Identify best practices for requesting health information from practitioners during the credentialing process and implement new strategies to evaluate and manage any health issues that are raised, all the while avoiding practices that unduly discourage practitioners from seeking diagnosis and treatment for health conditions.  .

SPECIAL NOTE:
This site is designed to supplement training that has already occurred and should be used to administer the post-test, collect CME evaluations, and issue credit.
