Cancer Documentation and ICD-10-CM Coding_Enduring
This course equips healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills to accurately code cancer diagnoses using ICD-10-CM. Participants will learn how to apply correct codes in clinical practice and understand the critical role of provider documentation in supporting accurate code reporting. Emphasis will be placed on the impact of precise coding for risk adjustment and quality outcomes.
Target Audience
This course is designed for physicians, nurses, and clinical staff.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the importance of documenting the site and/or type of cancer, since certain sites and/or types risk-adjust with higher severity of illness than others.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of official documentation and coding guidelines for proper ICD-10-CM cancer code reporting, based on the criteria of active treatment and/or active disease versus monitoring for recurrence.
- Build skills of best practice documentation for “solid cancers” (primary and metastatic) and “blood cancers” of lymphoma, leukemia, and multiple myeloma.
- Improve upon determining whether an active cancer code or a “history of” cancer code should be reported.
