GoHealth and UPMCHP: Obesity and BMI Documentation and ICD-10-CM Coding

A brief overview of reporting obesity and BMI with compliant ICD-10-CM documentation and code assignment.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, nurses, and clinical staff

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize and explain the importance of documenting BMI with an associated diagnosis, particularly for BMI values ≥40 that contribute to risk adjustment.
  2. Apply best practices to assess BMI values and link them to an associated condition, while documenting all required elements of M.E.A.T. (Monitor, Evaluate, Assess/Address, Treat) for that condition.
  3. Demonstrate accurate documentation practices for obesity, including classification (e.g., obesity class, morbid obesity) and corresponding BMI values in accordance with clinical and coding standards.
  4. Analyze provider documentation examples to determine whether criteria supporting the morbid obesity HCC are appropriately documented.
