Learning Objectives

Describe the clinical consequences of inaccurate neurologic prognostication, including its influence on decisions to withdraw life-sustaining therapy.
Evaluate the accuracy, confidence, and variability of clinician prognostic judgments in patients with acute brain injury.
Explain how intuitive (System 1) and analytic (System 2) reasoning contribute to prognostic decision-making, including how poorly calibrated heuristics can produce systematic bias.
Identify strategies to improve prognostication quality, including appropriate use of evidence and guidelines, calibration of clinical judgment, and structured team-based approaches.
