Pharmacogenomics in Practice: Pain

Pharmacogenomic (PGx) implementation is increasing in the US, especially in the treatment of pain where there is wide variability in medication response and strong evidence of the impact of genetic variation on medication outcomes. Commonly prescribed medications have Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) and/or FDA have PGx-based prescribing guidance. However, clinicians report low knowledge and confidence in using PGx information for adjusting dose or drug selection. This barrier must be overcome by clinicians who are responsible for integrating PGx into their practice to achieve positive outcomes.

Pharmacogenomics in Practice: Pain

A 1-hour, self-paced, online training for clinicians seeking to integration pharmacogenomics (PGx) in their practice for the management of pain.

Integrating PGx into your practice for the management of pain - Presented by:  D. Max Smith, PharmD, BCPS

  • Introduction and challenges with pain management
  • CYP2D6 and opioids
  • Phenoconversion and CYP2D6
  • PGx of NSAIDs
  • Implementation pearls and conclusion

Target Audience

All healthcare professionals, including: Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Physicians and Physician Assistants.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify gene-drug pairs with a high level of evidence in the treatment of pain.
  • Describe how pharmacogenomics variation affects the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of opioids.
  • Recognize the availability of evidence-based pharmacogenomics guidelines relevant to the prescribing of opioids and NSAIDS
  • Demonstrate the impact of phenoconversion on predicted CYP2D6 phenotypes.
  • Give examples of clinical situations when pharmacogenomics is likely to be useful in the treatment of pain
  • Identify specific challenges to the implementation of pharmacogenomics in the treatment of pain..
