16th Annual Masterclass in Cardiac Morphology

November 22, 2025

This year’s Master Class will focus on the anatomy, pathology, and evolving management strategies for aortic valve disease. A true understanding of the morphologic components of the aortic valve and root complex is essential for accurate interpretation of diagnostic imaging, surgical planning, and ultimately the delivery of high-quality care that improves patient outcomes. This topic is particularly timely given recent advances in our understanding of optimal surgical timing and renewed interest in the Ross procedure. Long considered primarily for pediatric and young adult patients, the Ross procedure is now being reconsidered for a broader population, including select older individuals. The course will also explore how advanced imaging and a deeper morphologic understanding can guide surgical decision-making and patient selection for various aortic valve interventions.

Learning Objectives

Describe the morphologic features of the aortic valve and root that influence surgical planning and outcomes.

Differentiate between traditional aortic valve replacement strategies and the Ross procedure, including indications, contraindications, and long-term outcomes.

Evaluate recent clinical evidence supporting the use of the Ross procedure in both pediatric and adult patient populations.

Assess optimal timing for surgical intervention in aortic valve disease to improve ventricular function and long-term survival.

Collaborate across interprofessional teams to develop patient-specific management strategies for aortic valve disease based on anatomy, imaging, and clinical status.
