Disability Types - Speech Disabilities

This self-paced online training equips healthcare professionals with essential knowledge and practical strategies to recognize, accommodate, and communicate effectively with patients who have speech disabilities. Learners will explore clinical signs, care planning, legal compliance, and interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance patient-centered care and improve communication access across diverse healthcare settings.

Target Audience

This course is designed for nurse practitioners, nurses, and other health care professionals who seek improved quality of care for the patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define the concept and scope of speech disabilities within clinical contexts.
  • Recognize common symptoms and indicators associated with speech disabilities.
  • Locate and evaluate accommodation tools and approaches used to support patients with speech disabilities.
  • Analyze the impact of speech disabilities on healthcare delivery and patient-provider interactions.
  • Differentiate and implement effective communication strategies tailored to patients with speech disabilities.
  • Access and utilize the Effective Communication Toolkit and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) resources.
  • Explain the role of speech-language pathologists in facilitating communication access and patient care.
  • Integrate acquired knowledge into clinical decision-making and care scenarios involving patients with speech disabilities.
