UPMC Williamsport Trauma RN Course

To provide education to registered nurses who are responsible for the care of the trauma patient in correlation to the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) standards. Nurses will be educated on the entire trauma system including multidisciplinary involvement and trauma related to each major body system. The education will be based not only on trauma system standards, but also on evidence-based nursing practice to enhance outcomes of all trauma patients, their families, and the community. Nurses must complete within the first year of hire to a unit who will care for trauma patients.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the structure, purpose, and standards of the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation trauma system and its role in improving outcomes for injured patients across the continuum of care.
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of registered nurses within the multidisciplinary trauma team from prehospital notification through rehabilitation and discharge planning.
  • Apply principles of primary and secondary trauma assessment to rapidly identify life‑threatening injuries and initiate evidence‑based nursing interventions. [elearningconnex.com]
  • Differentiate common mechanisms of injury and correlate them with anticipated injury patterns across adult trauma populations.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of common traumatic injuries based on body system and initiate appropriate nursing actions based on patient presentation.
  • Identify potential complications associated with traumatic injuries and prioritize nursing interventions to prevent secondary injury and deterioration.
  • Describe nursing considerations during the perioperative phase of trauma care, including preparation, communication, and postoperative monitoring.
  • Explain the principles of interdisciplinary trauma rehabilitation, including discharge planning, patient education, and coordination of care across settings.
  • Discuss the psychosocial, ethical, and cultural aspects of trauma care, including the roles of social work, pastoral care, child life services, and ethics consultation in supporting patients and families.
