Pharmacogenomics in Practice: Nursing
This training prepares nurses to integrate pharmacogenomics (PGx) into clinical practice by building foundational knowledge of how genetic variation affects medication response, identifying medications with PGx prescribing guidance, locating trusted PGx resources, and recognizing potential gene-drug interactions. Participants will learn to apply pharmacogenomics during medication history collection, identify unexpected medication responses, and communicate relevant PGx information effectively as members of an interprofessional healthcare team to support safer, more personalized patient care.
Pharmacogenomics in Practice: Nursing
A 2-hour, self-paced, online training for clinicians seeking to learn foundational concepts for the integration of pharmacogenomics (PGx) in their practice.
Target Audience
All healthcare professionals, specifically Nurse Practitioners, and Nurses.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Explain the value of PGx in individualizing prescribing for each patient.
- Describe the role nurses play in PGx-guided care.
- Identify whether a patient has had prior PGx testing.
- Differentiate high-alert medications, including those with PGx associations.
- Apply a systematic process for obtaining medication information from multiple sources.
- Communicate medication information accurately, completely, and in accordance with institutional standards to support continuity of care and patient safety.
- Evaluate patients for unexpected medication responses that may be impacted by PGx and advocate for appropriate adjustments.
