20th Annual Pittsburgh Conference on Child Maltreatment

April 30, 2026 to May 1, 2026

At the Child Advocacy Center at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, it is our mission to protect children and promote healthy families.  We strive to accomplish this mission by adhering to standards of excellence in assessment of child maltreatment and in medical care of vulnerable children.  We also work in collaboration with and in support of the efforts of other child protection professionals, by providing acute and primary medical care, case management, medical consultations, court testimony and SCAN and multidisciplinary team meetings.

Target Audience

All individuals who touch the lives of maltreated children to include but not limited to Physicians, Advanced Practice Practitioners, Nurses, Allied Health Care Workers, Social Workers, Child Protective Services, Councilors, Advocates, Case Workers, Law Enforcement, Attorneys and Judges

Learning Objectives

1.Differentiate between accidental and abusive injuries in children using evidence‑based clinical and forensic indicators.
2.Document findings from suspected child maltreatment evaluations clearly and accurately to meet medical‑legal standards.
3.Apply structured forensic interviewing principles when interacting with children who may have experienced maltreatment.
4.Evaluate cases of suspected abuse or neglect using validated tools and standardized assessment protocols.
5.Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary partners (healthcare, CPS, law enforcement, legal) to ensure coordinated case management.
6.Identify and intervene when children or adolescents are experiencing exploitation, including technology‑facilitated or high‑risk situations.
7.Mitigate bias in child maltreatment assessment and reporting by recognizing factors that contribute to inequitable outcomes.
