The purpose of this training is to enhance client centered communication approach and skills using the framework of Motivational Interviewing.

 

Target Audience

UPMC Health Plan RNs / SW / Health Coaches / Dieticians

Learning Objectives

1.  Identify core concepts and principles of motivational interviewing (MI) as applied to a healthcare setting.

2.  Describe the evidence that supports the efficacy of MI.

3.  Explain the importance of a client-centered approach in working with patients/members.

4.  Compare the traditional medical approach and the MI approach.

5.  Identify the worst case and best-case scenarios in health coaching.

6.  Demonstrate strategies to validate a member’s concerns and express empathy.

7.  Demonstrate strategies to ask open ended questions, affirm, reflect and summarize.

8.  Identify and recognize and respond to change talk.

9.  Demonstrate strategies to evoke change talk from a member.

10.  Explain in summary the basic principles of MI.

11.  Demonstrate awareness of current strengths and areas of growth in the MI skills-set.

12.  Demonstrate strategies and skills used in each of the phases of MI:  engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning. 

13.  Apply MI strategies and skills in a culminating activity.

14.  Apply and practice core concepts and principles of MI through case study with practice and feedback using standardized patients.

Welcome and opening activity which includes “Batting Practice” where participants work on creating validating statements that are MI-congruent in response to challenging patient statements based on real healthcare settings.

Culminating Activity: Standardized Patient practice & feedback in breakout groups where a facilitator and small group develop a client persona and then participants have an opportunity to apply MI skills in coaching role-play with a standardized patient and receive feedback on their approach.

Amanda Gabarda, EdD, MPH, NBC-HWC
Dr. Gabarda is the Senior Director of Clinical Training & Development at UPMC Health Plan where she is responsible for the creation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of training and skill development of lifestyle health coaches and care managers. She has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Exercise Science from Slippery Rock University, a Master of Public Health from Walden University, and a Doctor of Education in Health and Physical Activity from the University of Pittsburgh.  Ms. Gabarda is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, a National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach, and a Certified Health Education Specialist and has 15+ years of experience in health promotion and health coaching.
 
Renee Greenwald, MS, NBCHWC
 
Renee Greenwald is the Manager of Clinical Training & Quality Assurance at UPMC Health Plan where she is responsible for supporting the Health Coach Academy team with developing the Motivational Interviewing skillset of UPMC Health Plan clinicians through various training and Quality Assurance Review. She has a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Slippery Rock University and a Master of Science in Exercise Science and Health Promotion, specializing in wellness and fitness and wellness coaching from Penn West California.  Renee is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and is a Nationally Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach with about 5 years of experience in health coaching.

Michael J. Connell, MS

Mr. Connell is the Clinical Engagement Coordinator for UPMC Health Plan’s Clinical Education Team. Mr. Connell has a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Connell was a Health Coach at the UPMC Health Plan for six years where he had extensive experience coaching members to adopt healthy behaviors, including smoking cessation, physical activity, nutrition, stress management, and weight management. Mr. Connell was responsible for training the engagement and coaching skills of the lifestyle health coach team from 2010 to 2015. Mr. Connell is currently responsible for improving the engagement and Motivational Interviewing skills of clinical staff at the UPMC Health Plan, including RNs, Health Coaches, and Case Managers.
 
Indira Stokes, MPH, CHES, NBC-HWC

Indira is a Clinical Engagement Coordinator at UPMC Health Plan where she is responsible for training and skill development of health coaches and care managers. She has a bachelor's degree in biology and economics and a master's in public health from the University of Pittsburgh. Indira is a Certified Health Education Specialist and a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach. She has been practicing health coaching since 2016.

Brittany Chapman, MSW, NBC-HWC
Brittany is a Clinical Engagement Coordinator at UPMC Health Plan. Her responsibilities include professional skill development and training of care managers and health coaches. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Wright State University and a master's degree in social work from the University of Southern California. Brittany is also a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach with about 6 years of experience in Health Coaching.
