Cardiac Education Series: Respiratory Management in the pediatric cardiac population
Self-learning worksheet to provide practice with respiratory therapies and interventions in the pediatric cardiac population. Learners will complete a series of multi-step questions related to the pediatric cardiac population and submit answers in a test format to receive credit for participation. Upon completion of the 4-5 page worksheet, staff will have to look up policy/Lippincott guidance and use resources on the unit for completion of activity. Staff have the ability to work with the educator to have the opportunity to ask questions and develop skills related to respiratory therapies and airway management. Nurses will submit answers via Microsoft Forms. Need to achieve 100% to be eligible for CEU.
Target Audience
Registered Nurses
Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:
- Identify signs and symptoms of respiratory distress and impaired gas exchange in the pediatric cardiac population, including manifestations related to underlying cardiac physiology (e.g., cyanosis, increased work of breathing, hypoxemia in single-ventricle physiology, and altered pulmonary blood flow).
- Discuss key considerations for airway management and respiratory support in children with congenital or acquired heart disease, including strategies to maintain hemodynamic stability during intubation, extubation readiness assessment, and prevention of postoperative pulmonary complications.
- Identify one evidence-based consideration for the initiation, titration, or weaning of respiratory therapies (such as oxygen supplementation, noninvasive ventilation, or mechanical ventilation) that takes into account the patient’s specific cardiac diagnosis, shunt physiology, and oxygenation goals.
