The goal of the Critical Incident Stress Management Training course is to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic, and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum. This three-day course prepares participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services including Group and Individual Crisis Intervention techniques. The need for appropriate follow-up services and referrals when necessary is also described. This course will prepare you to provide support to individuals and groups following exposure to adverse events in the workplace.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course the participants should be able to:
- List common critical incident stress signs and symptoms of distress including physical, emotional, behavioral, spiritual, and cognitive.
- Define and describe in detail the CISM group processes of on scene support, one-on-one support, crisis management briefing, defusing, and CISD debriefings.
- Demonstrate individual and group crisis intervention techniques.

Mr. Magill is the manager of clinical services at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital, overseeing the Crisis Training Institute, emergency preparedness, and the As Soon As Possible (ASAP) staff support team. For more than 25 years, Mr. Magill has responded to crisis situations, providing behavioral health support in times of need to individuals in various settings, including healthcare facilities, businesses, schools, and in the community.
Mr. Magill manages the operations of UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital’s ASAP staff support team and has helped numerous organizations develop their internal staff support response teams. Jeff has worked both in clinical and management roles responding to behavioral health crisis situations. He has experience developing and teaching training programs in crisis management, suicide prevention and assessment, emergency preparedness, and behavioral health response to crisis situations.
Mr. Magill co-authored the “Comprehensive Crisis Management” (CCM) program and is an approved instructor for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation in “Assisting Individuals in Crisis and the Group Crisis Intervention Training” classes.
