UPMC HVI APP CARDIOLOGY FELLOWSHIP
Both new graduates starting their first job and experienced advanced practice providers enter the specialty have not had sufficient exposure to the full breadth of medical knowledge or the clinical application of medical knowledge needed to optimally practice as a UPMC HVI Cardiology provider. This activity will increase medical knowledge in the existing and entering APP workforce in the HVI. It will allow APPs to reach their full potential as critical providers on the heart team, fostering improved patient satisfaction, patient access, and ultimately clinical outcomes.
The course content for this training is hosted on The University of Pittsburgh Canvas Learning Management System website. This site hosts the course evaluation. Upon completion of the evaluation the certificate and course credits will be issued.
Target Audience
This course is designed for physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other health care professionals who seek improved quality of care for the patients of the HVI.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Explain the holistic patient care expectations, pursuit of scholarly activity, and the importance of ethical patient management as fundamental cornerstones of the HVI mission.
- Acquire fundamental knowledge of management of arrythmias in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.
- Outline a primer on EKG reading and anti-arrhythmic medication options.
- Evaluate invasive and surgical management options to treat atrial fibrillation.
- Utilize American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guidelines in patient management decision making.
- Evaluate, manage and treat the presentation of hypertension.
- Efficiently and effectively order and interpret correct diagnostic testing.
- Effectively co-manage alongside other members of the heart care team the presentation of mild to severe coronary artery disease in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
- Play a vital role in the management of emergent situations regarding NSTEMI and STEMI.
- Develop care plan decisions for medical, transcatheter, and surgical therapy to treat coronary artery disease.
- Effectively co-manage alongside other members of the heart care team the presentation of mild to severe heart failure in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
- Contribute to management decision making along the spectrum of therapeutic options from medical management to heart transplantation and the use of ventricular assist devices.
- Recognize the importance of medication optimization and how to effectively incorporate this into their practice.
- Effectively collaborate with other members of the multidisciplinary heart care team.
- Describe the presentation of mild to severe valvular heart disease in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
- Contribute to management decision making along the spectrum of therapeutic options from medical management to transcatheter and surgical interventions.
- Evaluate rapidly evolving technology in the structural heart space.
- Utilize the subspecialty expertise found within HVI's Cardiac Specialty Clinics and the patient populations they serve.
- Develop a better comprehension of amyloidosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cardio-oncology, and women's cardiovascular disease.
- Effectively utilize the subspecialty expertise found within HVI's Cardiac Specialty Clinics and the patient populations they serve.
- Participate in patient care management decision making for patients with Vascular Diseases.
- Efficiently and effectively practice cardiovascular medicine and surgery by implementing the principles of clinical documentation optimization, billing optimization, research and scholarly activity and other HVI APP initiatives.
