• Define and discuss the core components of SBIRT.

• Recognize strategies for identifying and avoiding stigma around substance misuse.

• Demonstrate the clinical application of validated screening instruments.

• Use the POLAR*S framework to conduct an intervention to learn more about a patient’s drug and/or alcohol use and facilitate behavior change.

• Describe how to make an appropriate referral to treatment.

• Identify strategies to implement SBIRT in various healthcare settings, including staff training, quality improvement efforts, reimbursement opportunities, and planning for sustainability.

Skill Practice- Implementation of SBIRT – 3 hours 

  • 30 minutes- Define and discuss the core components of SBIRT. 
  • 60 minutes- Screening Demonstrate the clinical application of validated screening instruments; Use the POLAR*S framework to conduct an intervention to learn more about a patient’s drug and/or alcohol use and facilitate behavior change; Describe how to make an appropriate referral to treatment.
