AACN PACES Education

July 24, 2025

At this time, the largest gap in current practice is that the care team does not prescribe appropriate or adequate opioids for patients that are in chronic pain with chronic opioid management, MOUD, or comfort measures only. This is mostly due to a large gap in knowledge on the action and dosing of these medications for these patients, as well as bias in dosing or patient population. This education will look to address and close this gap by addressing the best practice based on EBP for dosing for patients that have MOUD with chronic use or comfort measure patients.

Education on PACES (drug, alcohol, pain management) treatment to be presented to Critical Care Nurses that practice in the CVICU, TNICU, and MICU at UPMC Hamot.
