Affiliated Provider-Direct Care Staff Baby Friendly Step 2 Competency - UPMC Learning

Guidelines & Evaluation Criteria (GEC) spell out the minimum standards that facilities must achieve in order to achieve/maintain Baby Friendly (BF) designation. The updated release of these guidelines represents 3 years of work to bring the GEC to fully align with implementation guidance released by WHO and UNICEF. Updated guidelines emphasize meaningful conversations & shared decision making between providers and families around evidence –based practices. A completely new approach to Step 2 with a strong emphasis on competency verification with target training to address identified gaps in knowledge and skills. Performance Indicators need to be verified for all role groups in order to support each of the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. Providers and direct care staff alike are required to have the knowledge and skills to care for our patients. This education session will help to ensure consistency in practice and align education and skills competencies with the new Baby Friendly USA Guidelines.
