Beyond The B52: Practical Management of The Community Emergency Department Extended Length-of-Stay Behavioral Health Patient

The UPMC Behavioral Health Network and UPMC Community Emergency Medicine will present this special half-day virtual program designed to:

•    Increase the skill set of emergency medical physicians to help them better manage emergency department long length-of-stay psychiatric patients. 
•    Address salient medicolegal issues when working with this patient population.
•    Provide community emergency medicine physicians a more comprehensive view of the UPMC emergency departments’ behavioral health system and workflow.

Target Audience

This event is designed for physicians and residents and their community partners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the program, attendees will be able to:

1.    Understand common medicolegal issues associated with the care of psychiatric patients presenting in the emergency department.
2.    Describe the clinical protocols used to triage and coordinate care for patients with psychiatric disorders presenting to community emergency rooms.
3.    Summarize the behavioral health services available to long length-of-stay patients presenting in emergency departments across UPMC facilities.
