Clinical Case Review: Intrauterine Growth Retardation
Nurse Home Visitors see a wide variety of mothers and their infants, most dyads are healthy but because of socioeconomic factors are at a higher risk of developing problems. Reviewing these cases is valuable way to teach and learn. Two instances of intrauterine growth retardation will be described and discussed in a case study format.

1. Differentiate intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) from an infant who is small for gestational age (SGA).
2. List the three general causes of IUGR.
3. Describe the physical findings in pregnancy that may indicate IUGR.
4. Describe the common medical management of a pregnancy with suspected IUGR
5. Describe the role of the NFP nurse in helping to identify and support a mother with suspected IUGR.
6. Identify resource materials that would be helpful to family who is experiencing an atypical pregnancy.
