11/20/25 - Anesthesiology Grand Rounds - Preventing Sudden Cardiac Death: Cardiac Screening, Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Project ADAM- Brian J. Funari, MD
This activity will enhance clinicians’ ability to perform comprehensive pre-sports cardiac screening, including history, family history, and physical examination, while applying evidence-based algorithms for testing and referral. Participants will also strengthen recognition of common causes of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes and improve strategies for primary and secondary prevention to reduce morbidity and mortality.
Target Audience
Anesthesiologists and anesthesiologists-in-training and other anesthesia professionals, nurse anesthetists and anesthesia assistants.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Conduct comprehensive pre-sports participation cardiac screening evaluations, incorporating appropriate history, family history, and physical examination.
- Apply evidence-based screening algorithms to determine appropriate cardiac testing and initiate timely referral to Cardiology.
- Identify common etiologies of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes through clinical assessment and risk stratification.
- Implement strategies for primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac arrest and death in athletic populations.
