Neutropenic Fever

Newly hired staff nurses have limited experience with caring for oncology patients. Neutropenic oncology patients are a vulnerable group that require quick recognition and initiation of proper care.

This activity will fill gaps in knowledge related to our oncology neutropenic patient population and allow them to recognize and more effectively communicate findings to members of the interprofessional healthcare team.

Target Audience

Nurses, Nurse Practitioners and clinical staff.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Recognize a patient presenting with concern for neutropenic fever and promptly start the appropriate workup to identify the source of infection.
  • Recognize the importance of prompt initiation of broad-spectrum antibiotics in a patient presenting with neutropenic fever.
  • Identify the high acuity of neutropenic fever patients and will know how to monitor them appropriately.
  • Explain the sepsis criteria and goals for treatment.
