Ethics Series: Caring for and With Our Immigrant Neighbors: History, Strategy, and Resources

During this presentation, learners will sort through some of the complexities of our immigration system by considering the history of immigration policy in the US and how it has resulted in various categories of immigrants. There will also be discussion of how our patchwork health-care system tries to address their needs and provide basic pointers to help us serve these neighbors in a more caring and efficient manner.

1. Identify categories of patients who are immigrants and their particular concerns & needs. 
2. Develop strategies to access resources to support asylum seekers and undocumented immigrant patients.

Mark Kuczewski, PhD, HEC is the Fr. Michael I. English, S.J., Professor of Medical Ethics.  He is also the director of the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy.

In support of improving patient care, the University of Pittsburgh is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

This activity is eligible for endorsed credit for UPMC Health Plan EMTs and Paramedics.  Complete ETHOS course work, obtain the attendance certificate, and submit to EMS governing body for 1.0 CE credit(s). 

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, University of Pittsburgh is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. University of Pittsburgh maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.0 continuing education credits. 

NOTE:  Paramedic/EMT CE is approved for any activity in which ANCC (nursing CE) is approved.
