Multi-disciplinary conference which will provide the nurse learners updates on patient care with respect to Impella, and mechanical ventilation.  The learners will also participate in practice updates regarding aviation operations and the safety of the multi-disciplinary medical team.  The learners will participate in multi-disciplinary activities to enhance communication and understanding of the logistics of patient transport.  The learners will participate in activities which will enhance the understanding, management and available resources for critical incident stress.

Flight Nurse, Flight Physician, and Flight Paramedic

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the learner will:

  1. Identify the pump components for the Impella cardiac assist device
  2. Demonstrate the key assessment points for the patient receiving therapy from an Impella cardiac assist device
  3. Evaluate the changes to patient care related to the data displayed by the Impella Heart Pump in relation to patient clinical presentation.
  4. Identify various types of stress in the transport environment
  5. Recognize different reactions to stress.
  6. Demonstrate coping strategies to deal with stress reactions.
  7. Identify available resources for peer support to include peer support groups (CISM)
  8. Recognize the importance of STAT MedEvac’s Part 135 GOM standards.
  9. Demonstrate expectations outlined in the GOM as it relates to the air operations, specifically to Pilot in Command (PIC) briefing, walkarounds, and use of checklists.
  10. Identify the components of a transport assignment and crew utilization.
  11. Evaluate a complex transport.
  12. Apply the concepts of crew resource management.
  13. Identify specific actions to facilitate the transport from all viewpoints.
  14. Demonstrate understanding of decision outcomes.
  15. Describe the outcome process.
  16. Identify the required components of the ventilator consult.
  17. Demonstrate the ability to locate advanced ventilation parameters on the Hamilton T-1
  18. Apply advanced ventilator parameters and settings into a consult.
  19.  Recognize the presentation of restrictive and obstructive ventilator pathologies.
