Introduction

The Pittsburgh Schizophrenia Conference is typically an annual in person meeting at which the advances in schizophrenia research and treatment are reviewed by experts in the field. This year’s meeting will be in person at the Sheraton Station Square.

Gerard E. Hogarty Excellence in Schizophrenia Research Memorial Award

Professor Gerard Hogarty was a faculty member of the Department of Psychiatry and a member of the UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital for more than 30 years. Until his passing in 2006, Professor Hogarty pursued important questions related to the nature and treatment of schizophrenia – namely relapse prevention and inter-episodic social function. His career in clinical research led to major advancements in the treatment of individuals with schizophrenia and his work continues to be recognized both nationally and internationally. In addition to his research endeavors, Professor Hogarty was an incredibly talented teacher and mentor who played a significant role in the career development of many respected researchers and clinicians in the field.

Target Audience

Who Should Attend:

The conference is designed to disseminate the latest clinical and research findings to a wide audience: psychiatrists and other mental health clinicians, including nurses, social workers, psychologists, service coordinators, researchers, patients and their relatives, mental health policy administrators and others who intend to keep current regarding treatment and research in schizophrenia.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Review the potential clinical benefits of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor agonists for treating the core symptoms of schizophrenia. The history as well as the molecular, cellular and neurocircuit mechanisms of action of this novel class of antipsychotic medicine will also be reviewed.
  2. Effectively integrate, weigh, and critique the various relationships between cannabinoid exposure and psychosis outcomes and apply the knowledge about the risks of psychosis with exposure to cannabinoids in their clinical practice.
  3. Increase their understanding of the implications improving behavioral health outcomes through enhanced and focused medical management.
  4. Review and gain knowledge on the potential benefits of treating cognitive impairments in persons with schizophrenia.
  5. Compare preceding mental health-related diagnoses, prescription drug use, and behavioral health services utilization in adolescent and young adult patients diagnosed with a first episode of Schizophrenia vs. those with Major Depressive Disorder.

  • Please retain your certificates in a safe place. Replacements cost $30 for those that come from our office (Gen. CEU; NCC).
  • Except for physicians requesting CME continuing education credit, variable credits are not provided. Participants requesting must attend the entire day.
  • Although the evaluation is not mandatory, we appreciate your participation. Please expect the certificates from our office in four to six weeks post-conference. Those obtained from the registration site can be accessed immediately.
