Addressing Addiction in Advanced Illness

  • Discuss the intersecting issues of serious illness, chronic pain, and substance use disorders
  • Evaluate the current model of addiction treatment
  • Review what contributes to addiction
  • Assess and manage the addiction/serious illness overlap

Target Audience

This course is designed for health care professionals including physicians, nurses, patients and caregivers, among others.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the importance of considering substance use in the care of individuals with advanced illnesses such as cancer
  • Analyze cases in three dimensions: pain, addiction, and prognosis to develop a management plan in patients with life-limiting illness
  • Identify strategies to balance pain control with management of addiction in patients with advanced illness.
