Program Evaluation Research Unit (PERU)

This activity will provide healthcare professionals with an understanding of the prevalence and effects of alcohol misuse. Healthcare professionals will also learn how to diagnose alcohol use disorders, discuss behavior change and harm reduction strategies with patients, and treat those with alcohol use disorder.

Learning Objectives


• Describe the physical, social, and mental effects of alcohol use.

• Use guidelines to differentiate between lower-risk and higher-risk alcohol use.

• Recognize the signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication and overdose.

• Identify the pharmacotherapies available for management of alcohol use and alcohol use disorder (AUD).

• Discuss the risks and benefits of pharmacotherapies approved for treatment of AUD.
