This program has been developed to review the multitude of challenges faced when caring for a mother/baby dyad exposed to substance abuse and fetal alcohol syndrome. The information presented will describe the problem and share strategies to help these families.

Target Audience

The program was developed for nurse home visitors working in the Nurse Family Partnership Program. However, the content would be relevant to any nurse working with a similar populations

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the pathophysiology related to neonatal abstinence syndrome (opioids).

2. Match symptoms in infants to the substance used by the mother (alcohol, opioids, cocaine).

3. identify evidence-based interventions for neonatal abstinence syndrome.

4. List four themes important when feeding infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome.

5. summarize possible long term effects experienced by children exposed to substances in utero.
