Our conference this year will focus on meeting the diverse behavioral health needs of older adults. The diversity of needs can be due to many factors ranging from diagnosis to a person’s lived experiences to the current treatment setting. Two under-the-radar diagnoses will be covered in this year’s conference: substance use disorders and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. With the aging "Baby Boomer" population, the management of comorbid substance use disorders is an emerging area of need. And ADHD in the older adult population is becoming an area of increasing interest for both patients and providers. Individuals with serious mental illness face additional challenges as they age and move into the long-term care settings. Our speakers will discuss how the physiological changes of aging can add additional challenges in working with older patients with SMI. In addition, our speakers will discuss the unique opportunities and challenges that exist in working in the long-term care setting. Finally, we will hear more about the experience of LGBTQ+ elders in the community and what we as providers can do to help engage them with mental health services and care as they age.
This program is designed for all providers serving the aging population.
Target Audience
Providers working with older adults including physicians, nurses, front-line staff, case managers/service coordinators, therapists, and clinicians. Family and caregivers are welcome to attend.
