PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Black Mental Health Matters (Part I) is a webinar facilitated by Dr. Eunice Peterson, a board-certified Adult, and Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist. The webinar is an interactive presentation with a Q&A session designed to provide participants with an understanding of how racism impacts mental health. Dr. Peterson will present information on the history of racism in healthcare, the stigma of mental healthcare in communities of color, and the impact of microtraumas and microaggressions on the mental health/wellness in communities of color. Part I of this webinar program will focus on some of the ways that the history of racism impacts the delivery and accessibility of mental health care in communities of color. While both Part I and Part II of "Black Mental Health Matters" are open to all participants, Part I of the series will provide insights specific to healthcare providers and the staff that support them.
Target Audience
This presentation will be appropriate across all levels of the system – including those in the social worker field; child welfare; education; juvenile justice; human services, direct service including physical medicine, behavioral health, and clinicians; youth and young adults; family and related supporters; and, administration and support, and policymaking.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the history that informs the barriers to seeking mental healthcare in the Black community/communities of color and to learn some of the ways in which racism impacts mental health.
- Describe the key determinants of racial equity in delivering mental health services and to sensitize healthcare professionals to the equity challenges across race in mental health services.
- Identify ways in which police brutality and other forms of institutional racism impact the mental health in the Black community and communities of color.
- Provide patient/patient communities and mental healthcare providers with insights into how micro trauma and microaggressions (related to racism) impact mental health.
- Recognize how micro trauma and microaggressions (related to racism) impact the mental health of students in the classroom.
Dr. Eunice Peterson, MD
Board Certified Adult and Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist
Dr. Peterson is a board-certified Adult and Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist who is a proud graduate of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. She completed her psychiatry residency as well as her child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship with the University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt program. Dr. Peterson previously served in a variety of roles within the Greenville Health System, including Interim Chair of the Academic Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, Vice Chair of Academics and Research, and Program D.

Under her leadership, the psychiatry residency was awarded the American Academy of Psychodynamic Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis (AAPDPP) 2018 Victor J. Teichner Award.
Dr. Peterson currently delivers mental healthcare via tele-Psychiatry for a variety of healthcare providers. She has an abiding interest in advocacy, psychoeducation, elimination of health care disparities, eradication of mental health stigma, and promotion of mental health and wellness director of the GHS/USCSOMG Psychiatry Residency Program. Dr. Peterson’s accomplishments include being the Co- Principal Investigator for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Eugene Washington Engagement Award, publication of several peer-reviewed articles and coordination of several community-based projects. Psychologists
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, University of Pittsburgh is approved to offer psychology continuing education by the American Psychological Association. University of Pittsburgh maintains responsibility for this course. Psychologists completing this course receive 1.5 continuing education credits.
Counselors
Education and Consultative Services of UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 5059. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Education and Consultative Services of UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital is solely responsible for all aspects of this program. This program is being offered for 1.5 continuing education hours.
Licensed/Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists: LSW/LCSW/LPC/LMFT
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, University of Pittsburgh is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. University of Pittsburgh maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 continuing education credits.
Other Healthcare Professionals
Nurses and other health care professionals are awarded .15 Continuing Education Units (CEU's). One CEU is equal to 10 contact hours. Nurses: For attending this program you will receive a Certificate of Attendance confirming 1.5 hours of continuing education. These hours may be considered eligible for completing the 30 hours of continuing education required for biannual nursing re-licensure in Pennsylvania. Peer Specialists: This program fulfills requirements for Certified Peer Specialist continuing education.
