BMT Class Day 1: 9B Nurses

Novice nurses begin to learn the care of the BMT patient during orientation and can often focus on the tasks that need to be completed. With more experience, nurses can begin to understand the rationale behind their actions and better work with the interdisciplinary team to provide quality patient care. BMT Class 1 provides the foundational knowledge needed to be successful in caring for BMT patients and their families as these nurses progress through orientation.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the goals of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).
  • Describe the types of HSCT and indications for its use 
  • Describe HSCT donor types and selections
  • Define HSCT stem cell sources and collections
  • Describe other HSCT cellular therapy
  • Define the different types of stem cell infusions and implications for the use of each
  • Identify methods of stem cell product manipulation and explain the pros and cons of using each 
  • Describe the preparation of the patient and environment and the necessary monitoring for cell therapy infusions 
  • Identify expected minor and serious adverse events of stem cell infusion and nursing management 
  • Describe psychosocial considerations in caring for patients undergoing cell therapy infusions. 
  • Describe the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of certain non-malignant disorders (i.e. krabbe disease, MLD, ALD, etc.) that require a bone marrow transplant.
  • Demonstrate a successful central line dressing for patients receiving thiotepa per institution's standard of practice.
  • Define photobiomodulation (PBM) and its indication for use
  • Identify order set for PBM therapy and process for documentation.
  • Demonstrate successful use of PBM device.
