This course was designed to educate nurses on important areas of central line care in order to decrease patient's risk for infections and increase patient safety. 

Target Audience

Registered Nurses 

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify necessity of a central line including process for escalating concerns through chain of command
  • Determine line patency and identify appropriate actions for troubleshooting if line is not patent 
  • Identify infection prevention measures for central line care (occlusive dressings, alcohol swab caps, parafilm, and AnchorDry)
  • Recognize environmental factors that put patients with central lines at risk for infection and describe care to prevent infection
  • Determine importance of hand hygiene and scrub time for infection prevention
