This is the first of a five-part course that prepares nurses with the knowledge and tools to successfully lead the unit as a charge nurse.

Target Audience

This course is open to experienced nurses at UPMC St. Margaret who have been identified by unit leadership as ready to be trained as a charge nurse.

Learning Objectives

The learner will be able to:

  • Identify characteristics and behaviors of an effective charge nurse
  • Describe the components of an efficient charge report
  • Demonstrate making appropriate staff assignments for each shift
  • Summarize tasks that need completed during a shift as a charge nurse
