Children's Hospital and Tobacco Free Adagio Health Vaping & School Policy Workshops - March 2025

March 13, 2025 to March 27, 2025

The UPMC Health and Division's Healthy Schools program in partnership with the Tobacco Free Adagio Health Team is hosting a four part series focusing on increasing knowledge around vaping, talking to students about vaping and nicotine, and developing vaping policies. These are important workshops that will equip teachers, school administrators and staff how to be prepared to help students avoid and or quit vaping and nicotine.

Learning Objectives

1. Understanding the Epidemic: Participants will be able to identify the current statistics and trends related to vaping and nicotine use among school-aged children, enabling them to understand the scope and seriousness of the issue

2. Recognizing Risks: Participants will learn how to effectively communicate the health risks associated with vaping and cigarette smoking to students, emphasizing both short-term and long-term impacts on physical and mental health.

3. Engagement Techniques: Participants will be able to demonstrate specific techniques for engaging with students in open and supportive dialogues about vaping and nicotine use, to create an environment of trust and understanding.

4. Promoting Healthy Choices: Participants will be able to list strategies to encourage students to make informed decisions regarding their health, including practical approaches to promote healthier lifestyle choices and alternatives to vaping and smoking, which will lead to healthy lives.

5. Support Resources: Participants will be able to list resources and support systems available for students who may be struggling with vaping and or nicotine addiction, enabling them to effectively guide students towards appropriate help and intervention.
