Overview

The goal of the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM ASAP) Training course is to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic, and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum. This three-day course prepares participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services including Group and Individual Crisis Intervention techniques that are used as the core intervention platform for the UPMC CISM ASAP Staff Support Teams. The need for appropriate follow-up services and referrals when necessary is also described. This course will prepare you to provide support as a CISM ASAP Team Member to staff following exposure to adverse events in the workplace.

Crisis Intervention is NOT psychotherapy; rather, it is a specialized acute emergency mental health intervention that requires specialized training. As physical first aid is to surgery, crisis intervention is to psychotherapy. Thus, crisis intervention is sometimes called “emotional first aid”. This course will prepare participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services for both the individual and for groups. Fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) will be outlined and participants will leave with the knowledge and tools to provide several group crisis interventions- specifically SAFER-R, Crisis Management Briefings, Defusing, and the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD). The need for appropriate follow-up services and referrals when necessary will also be discussed.

This course is intermediate but does not have any prerequisites.

Target Audience

The audience for this class includes all departments of hospital staff with the compassion and empathy to support their colleagues with workplace-related adverse events. Please ensure approval by your manager and your business unit’s CISM ASAP Coordinator(s).
