Critical Incident Stress Management Training (CISM) - October 1-3, 2025
- NOTE: This course is for UPMC employees only
- Please do not register for this class unless you've received permission from your supervisor, and your business unit's CISM ASAP Coordinator. Your department will be charged for your participation. This course costs $400 and will be covered by your department once you are approved to attend.

- This is an all-day (7:45 AM to 6:00 PM) training for three days.
Overview
The goal of the Critical Incident Stress Management Training course is to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic, and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum. This three-day course prepares participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services including Group and Individual Crisis Intervention techniques. The need for appropriate follow up services and referrals when necessary is also described.
Target Audience
The audience for this class includes: all departments of hospital staff with the compassion and empathy to support their colleagues with workplace related adverse events.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course the participants should be able to:
- List common critical incident stress signs and symptoms of distress including physical, emotional, behavioral, spiritual, and cognitive.
- Define and describe in detail the CISM group processes of on scene support, one-on-one support, crisis management briefing, defusing, and CISD debriefings.
- Demonstrate individual and group crisis intervention techniques.

Education and Consultative Services of UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 5059. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital is solely responsible for all aspects of this program. This program is offered for a maximum of 27.0 continuing education credits.
Other Healthcare Professionals
Nurses and other health care professionals are awarded maximum of 2.70 Continuing Education Units (CEU's) for this day of the conference. One CEU is equal to 10 contact hours. Nurses: For attending this program you will receive a Certificate of Attendance confirming a maximum of up to 27.0 hours of continuing education for this day of the conference. These hours may be considered eligible for completing the 30 hours of continuing education required for biannual nursing re-licensure in Pennsylvania.
- Participants requesting Continuing Education credits must attend the entire training.
- Please retain your certificates in a safe place. Replacements cost $30 for those that come from our office (Gen. CEU; NCC). Please expect the certificates from our office in four to six weeks post-conference. Those obtained from the registration site can be accessed immediately.
