Objectives:
Become familiar with the characteristics of an effective plan.
Define and understand components of the triple constraint (scope, cost and timeline) as it applies to research
Identify differences between predictive and adaptive project types.
Identify components of a project management plan as identified by the Project Management Body of Knowledge.
Project Management Training for Research Professionals
The Project Management Training for Research Professionals is a eight and a half-hour course developed by the Clinical and Translational Institute at the University of Pittsburgh to introduce tools and strategies of project management. Attendees will gain concrete skills for planning and executing projects, assessing, communicating and managing issues, and leading groups in problem solving and decision making. Attendees are eligible for CEU/CME credit awarded by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Session 2
6: Project Implementation and Kick-off
- Objectives: Become familiar with the components of a project kick-off summary and engage the necessary stakeholders and tools in a project kick-off discussion.
- Tools: Project Kick-off Summary (aka Project Charter)
- HCD activities: Rose, Thorn, Bud
7: Project Planning
- Objectives: Become familiar with the characteristics of an effective plan. Define and understand components of the triple constraint (scope, cost and timeline) as it applies to research objectives. Identify differences between predictive and adaptive project types.
8: Project Management Plan
- Objectives: Identify components of a project management plan as identified by the Project Management Body of Knowledge (Scope Management, Cost Management, Schedule Management, Quality Management and Risk Management). Apply project management plan components to research applications.
- Tools: Requirements Traceability Matrix, Work Breakdown Structure, Schedules (Activity List, Gannt Chart, Milestone Charts, and Network Diagrams), and Risk Register
