Emergency Department Nurse Course 2024- September 25,26, and 27, 2024
This is a 3-day course for new nurses who are working in the emergency department.
Target Audience
New Nurses to Emergency Nursing
Learning Objectives
The participant will understand the components of a triage assessment, assigning ESI and patient placement to waiting room vs. treatment room.
The participant will be able to verbalize the understanding of organ, tissue and cornea donation referral process and nursing documentation.
The participant be able to identify the components of the trauma initial assessment of ABC's and initial care of a burn patient prior to transfer to a burn center.
The participant will recognize their role in providing moderate sedation in the emergency department - documentation, consents, mediations, and discharge criteria.
The participant will identify the signs and symptoms of a neurological emergency, including increased intracranial pressure, stroke, CNS infections and seizures.
The participant will be able to identify appropriate use of medication for management of neurological emergencies.
The participant will be able to identify UPMC procedures in caring for patients with behavioral health needs.
The participant will be able to discuss the nursing assessment and management of a patient who has overdose.
The participant will be able to identify 3 endocrine emergencies and their clinical presentations.
The participant will be able to accurately identify the components of START Triage and Pediatric Jump START triage for pediatric patients for Mass Casualty incidents.
The participant will be able to recognize changes in 12 Lead EKG and types of MI and nursing care to provide.
The participant will recognize the signs and symptoms of sepsis and nursing care to provide.
The participant will be able to identify appropriate pharmacotherapy for various the cardiac emergencies. along with normal dosing, monitoring, and adverse effect of these cardiac medications.
The participant will be able to recognize the signs of respiratory failure and identify common cause of respiratory distress and failure.
The participant will be able to discuss the use of airway modalities used in the treatment of airway emergencies.
The participant will identify common electrolyte imbalances and blood disorders along with their discernable clinical manifestations and treatments.
The participant will identify the clinical features associated with various gastrointestinal disorders.
The participant will identify the clinical features associated with various gynecological emergencies - such as STI's, PID, Emergent delivery.
The participant will discuss techniques to assist with assessment and care of a pediatric patient and discuss abnormal vital signs in the pediatric patient.
The participant will have a basic understanding of the types of patients who are victims of violence and the policy and procedures related to the care of and treatment of victims of violence.
