This course addresses various structural and metabolic oncologic emergencies and considerations for the patient with advanced cancer. This course is strongly recommended as a prerequisite for the Comprehensive Chemotherapy and Biological Therapies Course.

Target Audience

This course addresses the needs of registered nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and other members of the healthcare team who care for oncology patients in the acute care, outpatient, extended care, rehabilitation, and home care settings. Nurses and other healthcare professionals involved in cancer care, or those who wish to expand their knowledge of cancer care, are also welcome to attend.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Recall strategies to assess patients for symptoms of oncologic emergencies.
  • Recognize the diagnostic work up for oncologic emergencies.
  • Identify interventions to treat or manage the side effects of patients with oncologic emergencies.
  • Identify the similarity and difference between palliative care and hospice care.
  • Demonstrate learning has occurred by receiving at least an 85% on final quiz.
