Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this audio conference, participants should be able to: 1. Identify those classes of practitioners who must be granted “clinical privileges” to provide patient care services in the hospital; 2. Identify how the education, training, and experience of Advanced Practice Clinicians differs from that of physicians, dentists, and podiatrists and, in turn, can impact how hospitals and medical staffs evaluate their current clinical competence and delineate eligibility for specific clinical privileges that may fall outside of the formal education or training completed; 3. Develop processes that separate administrative policy determinations from subjective evaluations of practitioner qualifications, to provide better consistency and fairness when considering requests/proposals for new privileges or privileges that cross specialty lines, blanket waivers for categories of practitioners (e.g., moonlighting), and clinical privileges for practitioners re-entering practice after some time away; and 4. Identify best practices and accreditation requirements related to confirmation of practitioner competence for new privileges, and how those practices can be rolled-out in the context of unique privileging scenarios (such as telemedicine, temporary privileges, and disaster privileges).
