Interprofessional Grand Rounds: A Trauma Informed Approach to Caring for Patients with Substance Use Disorder

The aim of this talk on a trauma-informed approach to caring for patients with substance use disorders is to help bedside clinicians improve their daily interactions with patients and overall therapeutic relationships. The talk will describe an approach to caring that decreases the fear and biases patients with SUDs expect to feel while in the hospital. The talk will suggest simple changes to both our approach and everyday language that have been shown to improve outcomes for patients with SUD.

  • The learner will be able to Identify a trauma-informed approach to care that diminishes stigma and bias
  • The learner will be able to identify the importance of language through use of non-stigmatizing terms and descriptors
