This one-hour class prepares participants to handle an escalating patient or visitor situation.  It focuses on prevention through the use of therapeutic communication as well as verbal de-escalation techniques.

Target Audience

This course is open to all staff at UPMC St. Margaret including but not limited to nursing assistants/patient care technicians, health unit coordinators, nurses, and security offers.

Learning Objectives

The learner will be able to:

  • Describe how to prepare oneself for their role in medical de-escalation
  • Demonstrate the use of therapeutic communication to foster trusting relationships
  • Recall the ten domains of de-escalation
